Description/Job Summary

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades seeks a creative and experienced hire to work closely with the Communications Director to help amplify our shared mission and priorities with a national audience of members, workers, journalists, and our industries. The successful candidate should have strong written and spoken communication skills and a deep understanding of the labor movement. They should be able to operate effectively in a complex organizational structure. This candidate should possess strong proper grammar usage, proofreading abilities, copywriting abilities, be detail and deadline oriented, and a team player, along with being pro-active and committed to IUPAT values.


The Deputy Communications Director will report directly to the Communications Director. The successful candidate will work as part of a team based in our IUPAT headquarters deploying communication strategies.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Help develop and manage the communications strategy and day to day tasks, including traditional and digital media.
  • Collaborate with IUPAT International staff at our HQ, in the field, and District Council staff, to acquire, develop, and amplify content related to organizing, servicing, political affairs, and all other programmatic union priorities
  • Manage Communications Department staff and assist the Director with developing processes, structures, and tools to assist our work
  • Assist District Councils with access to IUPAT content and collateral.
  • Assist the Director with developing innovative ideas for campaigns, materials, and educational opportunities for IUPAT audiences
  • Ensure that all information is consistent, easy to understand, and well organized
  • Proofread and edit own work to improve quality, readability, consistency, and effectiveness of documentation.
  • Actively pursue opportunities for testimonials, success stories and case studies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of five to seven years of increasing writing and communications responsibility and success.
  • Be resourceful and creative, demonstrate strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Data-driven and experienced in meeting and exceeding goals.
  • Demonstrated success in writing a range of advocacy materials, including speeches, op-eds, columns, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust tones and capture diverse voices for varying audiences.
  • Extensive experience integrating messaging in social media outreach such as Instagram, Twitter, Linked In, TikTok, Facebook, and elsewhere.
  • Interest in leading the build-out of communications infrastructure: branding, communications strategy, website, social media presence, etc.
  • Commitment to the labor movement and its role in advancing economic and social justice.

Preferred Experience

Experience working in or with labor movement organizations is preferred but not required.

Preferred Education

Bachelor’s degree in English or related field preferred or equivalent experience.

? Strong knowledge of the labor movement and the ability to work effective independently and as part of a fast-paced, dynamic team
? Excellent oral and written communication skills including telephone etiquette
? Statistical review experience
? Prefer knowledge of PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Google Suite

Salary
$100,000 - $120,000 starting salary depends on experience, plus generous benefits package (including healthcare and retirement benefits)


Work Environment
Working environment will be hybrid office work with field work as required. The individual selected will often be expected to travel as a component of this position.
