Description/Job Summary

The Assistant Controller contributes to the overall responsibility for financial accounting, compliance, and reporting for the Fund to help achieve strategic business goals.  The position is expected to assist the Comptroller with all day-to-day functions of the accounting department’s operations including, but not limited to financial statement preparation, general ledger maintenance and reconciliation, accounts payable processing, cash management and reconciliation, payroll processing, investment administration, regulatory filings, and 401k administration.  The Assistant Controller is also expected to assist the Comptroller in the supervision and training of staff as well as ensuring all accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and Fund guidelines and procedures.  The Assistant Controller must be a hands-on, detail-oriented team player who can work to meet hard deadlines imposed by internal and external parties.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Oversees the major functions of the Accounting Department – Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll and Reporting.  Facilitate to run these operations smoothly.
  • Assists with annual responsibilities like Audits, LM, 990 and 5500
  • Prepares budgets and forecasts for the organization and related funds.
  • Prepares financial statements and supporting schedules for major funds.
  • Assists with tax document preparation.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports including Board Reports.
  • Oversees timely completion of bank and investment reconciliations and monthly reports like budget to actual reports.
  • Review GL throughout the year and initiate any necessary adjustments.
  • Review reconciliation of ledgers with subledgers and Due to with Due from balances.
  • Supervise mid-level managers and help them in their professional development.
  • Maintain records of financial fixed assets and other non-financial assets.  Works with other departments to track and update any changes to these assets.
  • Delegates accounting tasks to accounting staff as see fit and ensure their completion.
  • Monitors the department’s responsibility timetable and proactively takes necessary steps to make sure deadlines will be met and goal will be achieved timely. 
  • Ensuring all accounting practices are in compliance with legal guidelines and established accounting principles
  • Works with the Comptroller and Director of Finance to streamline the department’s work process and in reduction of any inefficiencies. 
  • Working with the company financial team to improve the internal controls and policies
  • Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
  • Overseeing Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable supervisors

Required Experience

  • At least 8 years’ experience in account is required
  • At least 3 years’ supervisory experience is required

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Sage Inatacct or similar accounting software is desirable
  • Experience with AP Automation is desirable
  • Experience with Taft Hartley and ERISA plans preferred
  • CPA or CMA preferred

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or related field is required (Masters Degree Preferred)

Details

Approximately 80% of the day is spent using the computer. Working environment is the typical office atmosphere with work conducted at an open workstation. Lifting of light boxes may be required in the course of organizing and distributing work in the office.
